EMBRACING CHANGE AS WE AGE

Writer: Michael MeyersMichael Meyers

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” -Leo Tolstoy

It's true we have all changed over the years. We've learned so much, lived so much, and hopefully experienced so many amazing things. With these memorable years we have also physically changed. We may not feel or look the way we did ten years ago, much less twenty five. We can't deny these changes or wish them away. Our values, views, and character traits stand the test of time as our hair turns a little grayer and our faces a little wiser.

Our lives are filled with multiple transitions. Some are positive some are negative; some we plan, some just happen. These transitions are events in our life. Little or big moments that shape who we are. All of our life events are constantly changing us. We may not have control of them all, but we do have control over how we handle them.

Ask yourself:

How do I handle transition?

Does this change my life or who I am ?

Was the timing of this good or bad?

Will this situation change my behavior or core values?

Will losing my patience help or hurt this situation?

Sometimes we want to hold on to what once was, but being adaptable to change will allow freedom and ability to age gracefully. Each day we are given opportunities for responding to life's experiences and allowed the chance to break free from old habits. This can be scary, but we need to view change as a chance to evolve and grow. When you set reasonable expectations, and don’t expect or demand a particular outcome, we're better able to manage any changes that do come our way and are given the gift of peace and patience.

Take a moment today and adjust your mindset and accept the changes around you. Big or small be open to the possibilities and you will wonder why it took so long for you to come around.
